USRowing has announced the 21 athletes who have made the 2002 Men’s Junior National Team. The U.S. will send five men’s crews to race at the 2002 FISA Junior World Championships August 7-11 in Trakai, Lithuania. Crews competing at the regatta include the men’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, men’s four, men’s four with coxswain and men’s eight.
The four, four with coxswain and eight were selected by the men’s junior national team coaching staff at the junior national team selection camp. The single and double sculls earned their right to compete at the junior world championships by winning the 2002 Junior National Team Selection Trials on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., at the end of June.
Of the 21 men, five are returning junior national team members. Mike Collins, Gary Champagne, Alex Hearne, Chad Taylor and Will Lippit are all two-time junior national team members. Collins, Champagne and Hearne will be competing in the eight, while Lippit will compete in the four and Taylor will cox the four with coxswain.
At the 2001 Junior World Championships, the U.S. junior men’s eight won the petite final (places 7-12) and took home seventh place overall, while the junior men’s four with coxswain finished eighth overall. The junior men’s pair with coxswain also finished eighth.
The 2002 Women's Junior National Team was announced last week.
